  1. The Yorkshire Dales offer some of the best walking in the country. As part of a two-volume set, this guide covers the south and west regions of the Dales in 44 fantastic day walks including the Three Peaks. The West and South facing valleys of Wharfedale, Littondale, Malhamdale, Dentdale and Ribblesdale are explored in gentle and strenuous walks between 3.5 and 13 miles long.

These Dales have a dramatic landscape; from the Great Scar Limestone outcrop, with its stretches of scarps and limestone pavements, to pastoral valleys where rivers froth above and below the ground, to the high reaches of moorland that sprawl into the horizon. Many of the region's 'must see' sights are part of this guide, including Malham Cove and Bolton Abbey, as well as the villages of Kettlewell, Grassington, Buckden and Dent, and the famous challenge of the Yorkshire Three Peaks.

The Three Peaks walk involves over 1,550m of ascent and nearly 23 miles of walking over Ingleborough, Pen-y-Ghent and Whernside. The terrain varies from moorland and hill paths to tracks with some lane walking. As this is a long distance walk, it is estimated that it should take a good 10hr30 or more to complete with the aim of finishing within 12 hours.

Each route in this guide includes an annotated OS map, details on the route length, terrain covered and available amenities. Also included is information on the history and geology of the Dales, wildlife, information on points of interest such as castles and abbeys along the way, and advice on practicalities so you can make the most of your trip to the Yorkshire Dales.

Routes can be combined and devised into longer walks
Almost all routes are circular to avoid retracing steps or being stranded far from where you started
