Arctic Sweden

In February 2006 Mike and Tony had a two week trip to Karesuando in Northern Sweden. The trip involved a lot of cross country skiing, fishing through the ice and snaring grouse. Whilst on the trip we were mentored by  Sami reindeer herder Tony Burnstadt. Tony Burnstadt has a wealth of knowledge about his environment, is an avid hunter and artist , concentrating on The Nature. The trip was a great success, many new skills learnt and formulated the new Arctic Trail course in 2007. 

Arctic Trail Full Course Details

All the team are in Sweden in February 2007 to carry out a weeks training we will mainly be concentrating on cross country skiing, shelter construction and the Sami way of life. All included are looking forward to this as for a few of the team it is new ground. 

Tamarack In House instructor programme

Mike has been busy over the year writing an in house instructor programme for the Tamarack Staff. This involves 4 levels with a rolling assessment at each level. As a trainee instructor qualifies and moves on to other levels the criteria gets more advanced and moves towards primitive living skills. The last level sees the instructor living alone for 1 week with nothing but a flint knife. The programme is over a 4 year period with the instructors learning and teaching as they go. New Instructors

New assistant instructors have been added this year. The new instructors have been enrolled on the in house instructor programme and are training towards the Origins assessment in May 2007. Instructors have all been on Tamarack Courses and have shown commitment, drive and a passion for Bushcraft and the outdoors. They have specific tasks that they endeavour to carry out in a 12 month period such as, Summer mountain leader, wilderness first aid technician and canoe instructor. We are always looking to add to our assistant instructors and in particular looking for female instructors in the future. Any interest please contact us.

What Mikes up To

Mike goes to Sweden on the 2nd Feb 2007 for a month working with Sami Reindeer herder Tony Bernstadt.  He will also return in June 2007 for a solo 2 week trip practising what he preaches. The majority of the trip will be self sufficient hunting and fishing whilst on the move practising old techniques and learning new ones. He will be roaming the region south of Karesuando around Tulinkivarra, Luongastunturi, lannavaara and tuolpukka mainly on foot but also in open canoe in this pristine untouched wilderness.
