                               THE ORIGINS WEEK

Sunday - You will be met at the designated meeting point at 1800 and taken to site. When on site you will either erect your own tent/tarp etc or organise your equipment in one of the tents provided. After this we will have coffee and introductions, along with a camp orientation. A light supper is then provided and we talk about the itinerary for the coming week. The lead instructor will then show and explain all the equipment that he carries while out in the woods, breaking this down into the bare essentials to carry to live well while outdoors.

Monday - The day starts with a light breakfast and then into the course. Knife, handsaw and bow saw use and maintenance is the first lesson and a very important one. Then we move onto our first woodcraft project which is a pot hanger. This particular pot hanger uses all the tools and techniques previously shown, to fashion a utilitarian item.

After lunch we concentrate on basic axe use. Using the axe and maintaining this tool makes life in the woods that little easier. After this we carve a beetle which is an essential tool around camp and start to shape a spoon and bowl from Sycamore. The evening after dinner will be spent carving, and spotting the local wildlife in action.

Tuesday - After breakfast we go down to the river and talk about an essential for life water. We look at different types of water and how to collect, filter and purify for our consumption. Then we move onto fire. The first stop is a demonstration on fire by friction using the bow drill method. After this you will fashion your own bow drill set and have a little practice. We then look at fire in further detail such as fire safety and the fire hearth, natural and manmade tinder’s, types of firewood, fire leys and other sources of ignition.

After dinner the evening is spent on carving and bow drill practice.

Wednesday - After you have started your own fire and made breakfast, we look into the fascinating skill of natural cordage using the myriad of plants and trees. After lunch we prepare dinner for the evening normally Rabbit stew. You are shown how to humanely dispatch , skin and butcher this type of game .

The afternoon is spent on traps and snares along with various fishing techniques. The evening is spent carving, bow drill practice and setting a trap line.

This evening there will be a lecture on the 6 deer species found in Britain, how to spot and track them, and how the animal can be used in a primitive context.

Thursday - After breakfast the day is entirely based on shelters. Firstly looking at siting your camp and the things to look out for, then moving onto natural shelter construction. Natural shelters are great fun to make and we look at different configurations to suite various needs.

Around the middle of the day we take a break and you are shown different ways of erecting a tarp shelter for winter, summer, observation and with a hammock. When all the shelters are constructed you can stay in them for the duration of the course if you wish.

After dinner the evenings are spent carving, bow drill practice, tracking, hunting and fishing.

Friday - Is observation and movement day. The day is spent re-opening our senses and learning to move correctly while in the outdoors. Stalking techniques, camouflage and concealment as well as observation exercises are all practiced. After dinner we concentrate on moving at night.

Saturday - Today is spent putting all your skills that you have gained in the week to test.

Note: Wild foods are featured on the course, but we look at these in small sessions throughout the week, this is so you are not bombarded by too much information at once.

Many different cooking techniques are shown on the course and all game is pre-dispatched.

The Itinerary may differ due to site, weather and seasonal changes.
