Day 1 - You will be met at the designated meeting point at 0830 and taken to site. When on site you will either erect your own tent/tarp etc or organise your equipment in one of the tents provided. After this we will have coffee and introductions, along with a camp orientation. We then talk about the itinerary for the coming three days. The course starts with Knife, handsaw and bow saw use and maintenance. Then we move onto our first woodcraft project which is a pot hanger. This particular pot hanger uses all the tools and techniques previously shown, to fashion a utilitarian item. After lunch we concentrate on fire such as fire safety and the fire hearth, natural and manmade tinder’s, types of firewood, fire leys and other sources of ignition. Then you can try some camp cooking over the fires that you have made, and we make a fishing kit for the next day. The evening is spent spoon carving and there will be a lecture on the 6 deer species found in Britain, how to spot and track them, and how the animal can be used in a primitive context. Day 2 - After you have lit a fire and made breakfast the day is entirely based on shelters. Firstly looking at sighting your camp and the things to look out for, then moving onto natural shelter construction. Natural shelters are great fun to make and we look at different configurations to suite various needs. Around the middle of the day we take a break and you are shown different ways of erecting a tarp shelter for winter, summer, observation and with a hammock. When all the shelters are constructed you can stay in them for the duration of the course if you wish. After dinner the evening is spent carving, tracking for deer and fishing. Day 3 - The day starts looking at the fascinating skill of natural cordage, and several projects using natures string. After lunch we open our senses and practice observation skills and learn how to move silently and unseen while outdoors. Note: Wild foods are featured on the course, but we look at these in small sessions throughout the three days, this is so you are not bombarded by too much information at once. Many different cooking techniques are shown on the course and all game is pre-dispatched. The Itinerary may differ due to site, weather and seasonal changes. Due to the nature of Bushcraft cutting tools play an essential part. It is down to the parent or guardians discretion if the young person in there charge uses these items. Other activities are available for the young people if cutting tools are not used.
