Tilley - Sizing your HatMost hat makers make 4 or 5 sizes; we make 13. As a matter of principle, no one shall be deprived of the pleasure and privileges of Tilley Hat ownership simply because of an uncommon head size
Like footwear, your Tilley Hat must be sized properly. To find your hat size, use a tape measure and draw it right around your head. For the best-looking and most comfortable fit, please make sure that the bottom of the tape touches your eyebrows while resting straight around your head. Hold it there comfortably and do not pull tight!
If you already know your regular (not a Tilley) hat size, please ask for one size larger when you order your Tilley. For instance, if you're sure you're a 7 1/4, order a 7 3/8.
The Tilley Hat fits more comfortably than other hats. It’s designed to be worn low on your head and slightly loose. It should be held on by gravity, not by painful pressure on your forehead! For the proper fit, you should be able to easily insert two fingers, flat, between the middle of your forehead and the front of the Hat. The Hat should be loose enough that you can rotate it to the left and right, and lift it up and down, without friction on your forehead. When it’s windy, use the cord!
DIFFERENT STYLES AND FABRICS OF YOUR TILLEY HAT: Each of our Tilley Hats are hand-made from a variety of fabrics in a handful of styles making each one unique in it’s fit.
Styling: You’ll find our ‘round’ crown styles (i.e. T3) and our ‘oval’ crown styles measure the same size but feel slightly different on your head. If you can fit two fingers flat between your forehead and Tilley Hat then the size is correct, even though they may feel quite different due to the crown style. If used to a ‘round’ crown style, it may take you a few days to get used to an ‘oval’ crown style.
Fabric: Although we offer a variety of fabrics, you’ll find that all our Hats are made with the same measurements (i.e. a T4 cotton duck Tilley will measure the same as a T4 in hemp Tilley). However, much like your clothes, individual fabrics feel different on, even when they’re the same size. For example, your lightweight LTM6 Tilley Hat will feel different than your TH4 Tilley Hat. Due to the varying fabric weights, each Hat offers its own unique feel. |
